Know Your Pest
What Is a House Mouse?
Mus musculus is the world’s most successful commensal rodent — it has co-evolved with human settlement for over 10,000 years. Adults are 6–8 inches nose to tail and weigh only ½–1 oz. Their tiny size is their superpower: they can squeeze through a gap as small as ¼ inch — the width of a pencil.
In Granite Bay homes, mice typically enter through gaps in the garage door seal, around utility conduit penetrations, along weatherstripping that has compressed with age, and through weep holes in stucco construction. They establish nests inside wall insulation, beneath kitchen appliances, and in stored cardboard boxes within weeks of entry.
A single mouse deposits 50–75 droppings per day and produces a distinctive musky urine odor that accumulates in nest sites. They contaminate three times more food than they consume — a single mouse colony can render an entire pantry unsanitary.
Early Warning Signs
Signs of Mice in Your Home
Rice-shaped pellets 3–6mm long, scattered throughout high-traffic areas. Found in kitchen drawers, behind appliances, along baseboards, and inside pantry cabinets.
Small, rough-edged holes in cereal boxes, rice bags, chocolate wrappers. Mice chew through plastic, cardboard, and foil with ease. Wood grain products and pet food bags are prime targets.
Light, rapid scurrying inside wall cavities, typically starting 30–60 minutes after the house goes quiet at night. Often first heard behind the kitchen or in the garage wall.
Mouse urine has an ammonia-like musty smell. In enclosed spaces like kitchen cabinets or pantries, this odor concentrates noticeably. A very strong smell indicates a large or long-established colony.
Shredded paper, fabric, insulation fibers, or plant material in a rounded nest shape. Common locations include the bottom of seldom-opened drawers, inside appliance motor housings, and in stored boxes.
Mice follow the same paths repeatedly. Smudgy grease marks along the base of walls, rubbed fur marks on joists, or dark staining in corners indicate established runways.
Our Approach
How We Eliminate House Mice
We examine all potential entry points ¼ inch or larger: garage door seals, utility penetrations, weep holes, pipe gaps under sinks, and gaps around HVAC lines. Active runways are identified with UV light to map mouse activity throughout the home.
Snap traps are placed perpendicular to walls along confirmed mouse runways. We never rely solely on glue traps or Repellent devices — snap traps on active runways produce immediate, measurable results within 24–72 hours.
Copper wool, galvanized hardware cloth (½ inch mesh), expanding foam, and door sweep replacements are used to seal every identified entry. This is the only permanent solution — no exclusion means re-infestation is certain.
Written report detailing food storage upgrades, clutter reduction, and any structural maintenance (weatherstripping, door sweeps, vent covers) needed to eliminate harborage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Over-the-counter rodenticides kill mice but don’t solve the entry problem. New mice move in to fill the vacancy. Poisoned mice often die inside walls, creating odor problems lasting 2–4 weeks. Without exclusion, you’ll be buying bait indefinitely. Exclusion addresses the root cause.
Hantavirus is primarily associated with deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus), which are common in Placer County foothills. House mice carry a lower hantavirus risk but do carry salmonella, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), and leptospirosis. Mouse droppings should always be cleaned with a disinfectant spray, never swept or vacuumed dry.
For a typical single-family home, inspection and trapping is same-day, with exclusion work completed in one visit for most properties. Older homes with extensive penetrations may require two visits. Trap checks are scheduled 5–7 days after placement to confirm population reduction before sealing is finalized.

Mouse-Specific Exclusion
Why House Mouse Exclusion Is Different From Rat Exclusion
House mice (Mus musculus) can compress their bodies through any gap a pencil fits through — approximately 6mm or 1/4 inch. A rat exclusion job that seals all openings to 1/4 inch stops rats. It may not stop mice. Mouse exclusion requires tighter tolerances, different materials in some locations, and a different inspection strategy that looks for gap types rats rarely exploit.
In Granite Bay and Placer County, house mice are most often found in garages, utility rooms, kitchen cabinets adjacent to exterior walls, and attic perimeter areas. They rarely establish in the center of an attic — that is more typical of roof rats. If you are hearing activity in walls adjacent to the kitchen or finding droppings in cabinet corners, mice are the more likely species.
Where House Mice Enter Granite Bay Homes
Stucco homes built in Placer County from the 1970s through the 1990s have weep holes approximately every 33 inches along each wall. These 3/8-inch openings allow moisture drainage but also provide direct mouse entry to the wall cavity. Standard weep hole covers block airflow; we use stainless steel weep hole screens that maintain drainage while excluding mice.
Garage man-doors, side doors, and interior doors connecting the garage to living space frequently have worn sweeps or uneven thresholds leaving 1/4 to 1/2 inch gaps at grade. This is a primary mouse entry route in Placer County homes.
Kitchen and bathroom cabinets typically have oversized holes cut for drain and supply pipes. The gap around the pipe is often 3/4 to 1 inch — large enough for mice to travel between the wall cavity and the interior. We pack these with copper mesh and cover with steel escutcheon plates.
The shared wall between an attached garage and the living space frequently has unsealed gaps where framing transitions, especially near the laundry area where washer drain lines pass through. This is the most common path from the garage to the living area.
What the Research Says About House Mice in California Homes
According to UC IPM, house mice can breed year-round in structures with consistent food and shelter — producing 5 to 10 litters of 5 to 6 pups per year. A single breeding pair can generate more than 200 offspring in four months under optimal conditions. This rate of reproduction means mouse infestations grow quickly once established, and that trapping alone — without exclusion — is a short-term measure: new animals repopulate the structure from outside as fast as interior populations are reduced.
